Two important dates occur in April in relation to promoting and prioritising wellbeing in the workplace, namely World Day for Health & Safety at Work on 28 April, closely followed by Ibec’s National Workplace Wellbeing Day which takes place on the 29th, with this year’s theme focused on how we can ‘Build Belonging’ to foster connection and community.

Health and safety goes far beyond physical protections – it’s also about creating environments where psychological wellbeing is prioritised, where people feel comfortable raising concerns, and where support is readily available. When we feel safe, we’re more able to collaborate, problem‑solve, and bring our best selves to work. A sense of belonging doesn’t just happen by chance; it grows when we consistently take small steps to foster trust, inclusion, and community.

What does ‘building belonging’ really mean?

Q: Why does belonging matter for workplace wellbeing?

A: A strong sense of belonging boosts morale, reduces stress, and increases engagement. When people feel connected, they feel safer to collaborate, innovate, and share ideas.

Q: How can I help build belonging on my team?

A: Simple actions count – greeting others warmly, inviting quieter voices in, sharing appreciation, or offering support. It’s the everyday interactions that create community.

Q: What role does health and safety play in belonging?

A: Feeling physically and psychologically safe is the foundation of belonging. When people know their wellbeing is protected, trust grows.

Q: What if I’m struggling to feel connected or supported?

A: You’re not alone. Speak to your manager, check in with a trusted colleague, explore Lena’s Digital Support Hub, or connect with Lena for confidential counselling.

Q: What’s one thing I can do today?

A: Choose one small action – ask a colleague how they are, share a positive comment, or take a mindful break. Tiny shifts build stronger cultures.
