July invited us to pause. Through Alcohol Awareness Week and a focus on self-care, many of us took the opportunity to reflect, reset and make small changes – whether that meant becoming more aware of our habits, building in better routines, or simply taking a bit more time to look after ourselves.
As we move into August and National Wellness and Happiness Happens Month – the focus shifts from awareness to momentum.
The question becomes: ‘How do we build on what we’ve started – and make it last?’
From awareness to action
Making a change, however small, is a powerful first step. But the real benefit comes from what happens next – turning small shifts into consistent habits.
Wellness isn’t about doing everything perfectly. It’s about creating a sustainable baseline that supports you day-to-day.
The good news? If you’ve already started to:
- Take regular breaks
- Be more mindful of alcohol
- Prioritise rest and recovery
- Build small self-care habits
… then you’ve already laid the groundwork.
Now it’s about gently strengthening those habits, not overhauling them.
Think of wellness as:
Consistency over intensity
Small actions over big intentions
Progress over perfection
Happiness: finding it in the everyday
While wellness supports how we function, happiness shapes how we feel. And one of the biggest misconceptions about happiness is that it comes from big moments ie holidays, achievements, major milestones.
In reality, research and experience show that happiness is far more often found in: small, positive moments, a sense of connection, feeling present and engaged and recognising what’s going well.
If July helped you feel more balanced, August is an opportunity to actively notice what feels good – and do more of it.
Wellness and happiness aren’t separate
– they work together.
Getting enough rest → improves mood
Taking breaks → reduces stress → creates space for positive moments
Reducing alcohol → supports energy, clarity and emotional balance
Self-care habits → make it easier to experience and recognise happiness
In short: wellness creates the conditions for happiness to grow.
